PAPERWORK, WORKS ON PAPER
DARIA CHERNYSHOVA, PROTEY TEMEN
20.01.2024 — 26.01.2024
Location: Culterim, Gesundbrunnen. Berlin, Germany
The exhibition is centered on the practice of working with contemporary drawing, including graphic arrangements, automatic handwriting, scientific elements, and bureaucratic forms. The spatial dialogue between the two artists in the exhibition format is the result of years of discussions about the harmonies and distinctions in the practice of presenting pure data and information through intuitive algorithms. What unites us is a shared inclination towards classification, cataloging, organizing information, and archiving experiences and knowledge. Each of us constructs a complex system of rules that govern the process of drawing.

Daria Chernyshova about her “Paperwork” series :
The series examines how bureaucracy permeates everyday life. The exchange of documents attracts through its visual form and its promise of order and systematization of information, yet at the same time it intimidates and often produces confusion.
The works employ the imagery of archival sheets, scans, codes, stamps, and handwritten notes — the familiar language of official systems. On top of this structured foundation, fragmented abstract forms appear, resembling debris, noise, or traces of lost data. They disrupt the logic of the document, transforming it from a carrier of meaning into a visual trace of a process.
In the context of migration, one encounters documents in a foreign language, which renders the pages formally unreadable yet intuitively unsettling. Even without comprehension, their structure, numbering, and formal demands continue to exert pressure, becoming symbols of control and dependency.
As documents accumulate and become obsolete, information turns into dust and waste, yet we are still required to keep these papers as proof of existence, movement, and compliance with the system. The document loses its communicative function and becomes an object of memory, anxiety, and accumulated tension.
